About

AmaMpondo soldiers, battered by their wars with amaZulu, had failed to find medicine along another river further north, which they called Umuthi awuvumi (“the medicine doesn’t agree”). Beleaguered and bone-weary, they stumbled into the lush valleys around another river where the banks were abundant with the healing plants they needed to treat their wounded. The amaMpondo christened the healing river Umthethu, “our medicine”.

Over time, the Umthethu became Mtentu.

The Mtentu River, located approximately 24 kilometres from the Wild Coast Casino, marks the northern edge of South Africa's Wild Coast, once known as the Transkei. This breath-taking region encompasses a remarkable diversity of fauna and flora, ranging from the striking red desert to the lush landscapes of the Mkambati Game Reserve. Visitors can explore numerous stunning waterfalls, including the enchanting Mnyameni Falls and the majestic Mkambati Falls, which add to the area's allure. The local Amapondo people are dedicated to preserving this natural beauty, promoting sustainable tourism that showcases the rich ecological and cultural heritage of their homeland. This commitment not only protects the environment but also enhances the experience for travellers seeking adventure and tranquillity in one of South Africa's most picturesque locations.
